RELIEF

The RELIEF (Resilient Livelihood and Enhanced Food Security in Northern Dhading) project will directly work with 1,600 households, the majority of which belong to ethnic minorities and underprivileged people, such as Tamangs and Dalits. The main objective of the project is to improve food security and climate resilience of the community by increasing food availability, accessibility, and income diversification while strengthening climate adaptive capacity through gender-sensitive project actions. We are working with local partner PRAYAS Nepal. The project is funded by the Canadian Foodgrains Bank and ADRA Canada and will run from January 2024 to December 2026, spanning three years focusing on remote Rural Municipalities in Dhading district.

Impact stories

Sabita Tamang, the chairperson of the Lhachet Farmers’ Group in Gangajamuna Rural Municipality–02, Latap, was nominated by her group to participate as a leader farmer in a five-day Climate Field School (CFS) facilitators’ training under the RELIEF Project.
Following the training, Sabita constructed a polyhouse and began commercial vegetable farming. With technical support from the project’s agricultural technicians, she installed a drip irrigation system inside the polyhouse. She is currently cultivating bitter gourd using organic farming practices and has prepared and applied homemade bio-pesticides (Jhol Mal) to manage insect pests effectively.
Her efforts have yielded encouraging results. She has already harvested and sold the first lot of bitter gourd, generating income that she plans to reinvest in expanding her farm. Sabita expresses that this income will not only help her grow her farming enterprise but also cover household expenses and support her children’s education.
