To support Nepal’s commitment to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD 1992) and the Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF 2020–2030), FECOFUN, with support from Project Samvardhan (funded by the EU and Austrian Development Cooperation and led by ADRA Nepal with ANSAB Nepal, BEE-Group, and FECOFUN as partners), organized a one-day workshop and interaction program in Kathmandu. The event aimed to engage Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities (IPLCs) in the drafting process of the revised Nepal National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP 2020–2030). The workshop raised awareness of the NBSAP, collected feedback, and promoted inclusive policy development by recognizing the vital role of IPLCs in managing biodiversity and natural resources. Dr. Krishna Chandra Paudel from the NBSAP Secretariat presented the NBSAP formulation process and highlighted opportunities for community involvement. An interactive Q&A session allowed participants to share experiences and suggest ways to make the strategy more inclusive and grounded in community realities. Dr. Bijendra Basnet emphasized the critical contributions of community forests to achieving NBSAP goals and the importance of integrating biodiversity conservation into Forest User Groups’ operational plans.
The event brought together diverse stakeholders, including representatives from various non-governmental institutions and different associations such as FEDWASUN, NACEUN, NFGF, NFIWUAN, NLRF, NAMHUS, Himawanti Nepal, AFFON, and media networks, creating a dynamic platform to ensure local voices shape Nepal’s biodiversity agenda.
