Providing Emergency Reproductive Health Services to Conflict Affected and Vulnerable Populations in Mid Western Nepal through Mobile Reproductive Health Camps
Nepalganj, October 29, 2009 – 197 women in western districts of Jajarkot, Rukum and Dailekh underwent uterine prolapse corrective surgery this year thanks to financial support of European Commission Humanitarian’s Aid department (ECHO) and collective efforts of UNFPA, United Nations Population Fund; ADRA Nepal, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, the Ministry of Health and Population, Regional Health Directorates, Nepalgunj Medical College Teaching Hospital, District Health Offices and other district stakeholders.
During the 12 month project “Providing Emergency Reproductive Health (RH) Services to Conflict Affected and Vulnerable Populations in Mid Western Nepal through Mobile Reproductive Health Camps” that ended this October, almost fifteen thousand (14 925) people from the three districts received general health services and more than four thousand (4 085) were counseled on HIV/AIDS, family planning and gender based violence. During twenty four reproductive health camps more than six hundred (632) clients received modern contraceptive methods and more than three hundred (320) persons affected by gender based violence were identified and counseled.
Apart from providing emergency reproductive health services to residents of Jajarkot, Rukum and Dailekh, the project aimed to build the capacity of local health workers. In order to improve the quality of local health care services ADRA Nepal trained sixty nine health workers on reproductive health in emergency settings and sixty health service providers on handling gender based violence cases. Fifty four heath workers were invited to join and work with ADRA’s medical staff in the health camps and received on site coaching on reproductive health problems, including uterine prolapse.
While addressing immediate health needs through mobile reproductive health camps, various activities were also conducted to prevent future health problems. 180 young people received life skills training; street dramas on reproductive health and general health were performed in twelve villages; and publications with preventive messages distributed.
Since 2005, ADRA has implemented humanitarian assistance projects managed by UNFPA in sixteen districts and has contribute to improve the lives of over 100,000 women, men and young people.
