ADRA gave me a smile in life
Posted on: November 19, 2009

“My life was full of hardship. I always thought that after my death all my problems would go with me. I had never thought that I would have a smile on my face again,” Surya Majhi recalls her story. Surya, aged 55 lives in a remote village called Rakam Karnali VDC, of Dailekh district in the Mid-West region of Nepal. Today she enjoys a normal life, despite previously not knowing if she would survive to live a good life.
“22 years ago, I faced a problem, when I was collecting grass in the nearby forest, my uterus started bleeding. It was the first incident that I always remember.” She tells, “When I returned home, there was no one to consider my problem with because one year ago my husband left this world and my children were not at the age to help me”. Every day I faced many hurdles and excessive bleeding. I suffered from backaches and I had white vaginal discharge. I always stressed, worried what would happen if anyone in my home found out; who can think of my problem? Because of my poor economical condition, I could not do anything to get rid off my problem. Besides this, I had to look after my home for the survival of my children. I always thought that if my husband was alive, then I would share with him my problem and he could do something about this. I survived my life with this problem for 22 years.”
“Last February 2009, my son took me to a health camp near my village. After checking me, the doctor called me and said “you need to get a operation on your uterus.” After five days, we went to Kohalpur with the help of an organization, and there the doctor did my operation. After the operation, when I returned home I found a new life. But I felt some weakness also. My doctor told me that I needed to rest for some months. Today I have confidence that I can be happily alive for 5 or 10 years more.”
“After three months, the organization again organized a camp in our village, I went there again and then I knew that it was ADRA Nepal who supported my operation. In that second camp, the doctor checked me again, and told me that I was completely fine. This time, I thanked ADRA Nepal and all the health workers from my heart, because it would not be possible to get this success on my own. If there was no health camp, then I would never find this new life.“
“I think that more women are also facing this type of problem near my village and in the hilly areas, where women have to work hard for their house; they do not have time to rest. And they are not able to share their problems with others, and getting health services. Today I got rid off my problem, but I think if we can help the other women then it will be great for other women.”
