New Village, New Life
Posted on: March 27, 2009
Tilkanya in the Kamaiya camp lies in Sandepani Village Development Committee of Kailali district. The camp looks like a modern residential area incorporating town planning methods. Everywhere there are similarly designed cement white houses roofed with cement tiles, with a safe haven and new school building nearby. The surrounding environment is also very beautiful, with greenery all around and a river only a few minutes walking distance.
In the past, there were only temporary small huts built from thatched leaves and hay. In the rainy season, the roofs leaked. The indoor part of the house got wet and destroyed stored grains, clothes and other belongings. Many small children suffered from pneumonia, diarrhea, typhoid, and other diseases.

The Tilkanya camp people came to the BASE office at Dhangadhi and explained their problem. Realizing their urgent needs after the need assessment, ADRA Nepal and BASE started the low cost bamboo house construction program. Since then, ADRA Nepal and BASE constructed 67 earthquake resistant, low cost bamboo cemented houses, one safe haven and the five room Mohini Primary School Building. BASE also built a toilet at the school with support from Save the Children US. Altogether, 311 people benefited from the new houses and 381 students attend the school.
After completion of the new houses, there was happiness among these people. They say that, “We could never have such a happy life with our own income. With your support, we have beautiful houses to live in. So, we are very much thankful for your work because it has changed our destiny.”
They keep the surrounding environment neat and clean and send their children to school. They are optimistic about their future and suggest continuing and expanding such programs in other places that serve marginalized people like them.
