Dr. Salil Bhattarai

PhD in Agribusiness and International Rural Development from Lincoln University, New Zealand. M.Sc. Agri (Horticulture) from University of Agricultural Sciences, Karnataka, India, B.Sc. Agriculture from Nepal, Salil Bhattarai has been working in rural development sector in Nepal since 1996 with various national and international agencies such as SAPPROS Nepal, Department of Agriculture/Government of Nepal, Tribhuwan University/Institute of Agriculture and Animal Science, Bagmati Integrated Watershed Management Programme, FORWARD Nepal, Helvetas Swiss Intercooperation and Rural Access Programme/WSP International. In his past employments, Salil has gained an extensive experience in agriculture and rural development, value chain of high value commodities, targeted livelihood enhancement, proposal writing, programme planning and management, and monitoring and information management. He has also worked as a consultant in a value chain study of vegetable crops and as data analyst in a baseline survey for a bilateral project in Nepal. In his PhD research, he evaluated the performance of agribusiness value chains from a smallholder perspective. He has also published papers in international journals and presented in international conferences. His professional interests are on strengthening smallholders’ capacity to address their food insecurity and making markets work better for them through an appropriate model of chain coordination and a better enabling environment for smallholder inclusion in agribusiness value chains. Salil has been working in ADRA Nepal since August 2014 and currently leading Livelihood thematic area of the organisation which aims at enhancing food security and increasing income of smallholder and landless people. He is leading multiple consortium projects funded by various donors including EU, DFID and ADRA network offices.
