Name of the Project

Agricultural Recovery of Earthquake Affected Families in Dhading District – AREA Project

Thematic Area
Livelihood

Project Background

A devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake hit Nepal on 25th April 2015 which caused loss of 8,856 human lives, serious injuries to 22,309 people and destruction of around 780,000 houses. The earthquake affects approximately half of the country and among them 7 districts were the hardest hit.
Dhading, as one of the 7 hardest hit districts, has a sizable population of indigenous and highly marginalized groups of people and the following three major issues were identified during the need assessment:
1. Decline in agricultural production due to damage of infrastructures, degradation of land and loss of livestock and crops
2. Limited knowledge and capacity of the targeted communities to start or diversify livelihood options for building back better
3. Weak linkage in input and output supply chain.

In this project, ADRA Switzerland collaborates with ADRA Nepal and Resource Identification and Management Society (RIMS) Nepal for planning, implementation and monitoring.
The main objective of the project is to support earthquake affected Chepang, Tamang and other marginal communities of Dhading district to recover their livelihoods. The outcome target is to increase at least 630 household’s income opportunities through improved access to input, technology and services, and strengthened linkages with financial services. Similarly, the outcome will generate at least 3,000 additional employment days from Cash for Work scheme during rehabilitation/construction work of damaged/new infrastructures. The project is designed to have increased income from new or expanded income generating activities of farmers that would have greater resources and capabilities to absorb shocks and stresses if similar disaster occurs in future.
